What Visitors Say

"

Wasn't expecting to fall in love with this place, but the whole experience changed my perspective on walking. The paths aren't too demanding, there's real history around every corner, and the guides actually know what they're talking about. My wife and I came back three times last summer. The views from the lakeside route are incredible, and you can go at your own pace. That's what made it perfect for us.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know before your visit

What's the easiest walking route?

The Main Estate Loop is the most popular choice for visitors aged 60+. It's 2 miles, mostly flat with gentle slopes, and takes about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace. The path is well-maintained gravel with plenty of shaded sections and benches every quarter mile. You can start and finish at the main parking area.

Are the paths accessible for mobility aids?

The Main Estate Loop and Lakeside Promenade are fully accessible with walkers and canes. The surface is firm gravel, not loose stones. The Castle Grounds route has some paved sections and some gravel. If you use a wheelchair, we recommend the Lakeside Promenade which has smooth pavement throughout. Contact us to discuss your specific needs.

Can I bring a dog on the walks?

Yes, dogs are welcome on all routes as long as they're on a leash. The estate is home to wild deer and nesting birds, so keeping dogs controlled protects the wildlife. There's fresh water available at several points along the paths for you and your dog.

What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Even though the paths are well-maintained, proper footwear prevents slips. Bring a light jacket — weather changes quickly near the lake. A hat and sunscreen help in summer. A water bottle is useful. In winter, ice cleats are recommended for some sections.

Is there parking and facilities?

Free parking for 120 vehicles at the main entrance. Restrooms are located near the parking area and at the castle grounds. There's a small café open weekends serving coffee and light snacks. Picnic areas with tables are available along the Main Estate Loop and Lakeside Promenade.

Are guided tours available?

Yes. Group tours (8-15 people) can be arranged with advance notice. We offer heritage tours focused on history, nature walks for bird watching and plant identification, and wellness walks incorporating mindfulness practices. Private guides for individuals or couples are available. Contact us at least two weeks ahead to arrange.
